For the past couple of weeks, months even, I've hidden from everything and everyone. Blinds closed, curtains drawn, hardly ever leave the apartment, deactivate my Facebook kind of hiding. I'm not really sure when it started but something triggered it. Something that to anyone else would be trivial and petty and easily brushed off and ignored. But here's the thing, when you are battling depression that is so physically, emotionally and spiritually crippling you can't separate the little things from the big things because they are all big things.
I've dealt with depression since I was a teenager. I've been on this medication and that one. In fact, I've pretty much been constantly medicated in some form or another for nearly the past 15 years - pregnancy and breastfeeding aside. I've been seen by psychologists and psychiatrists. I've been to family therapists, trauma therapists, LDS therapists. For those of you who don't know much about my life I suppose you could say that I sound like a crazy person.
Through all of that though, I have never felt as low as I do lately. I've somehow gotten myself into a place that is so dark and twisty that I don't even recognize myself anymore. I feel broken. Like all of my past and all of my present have flooded every inch of me with negative self doubt and insecurity. Why? I don't know. It could be a postpartum thing. It could be a PTSD thing. It could be a two-years-away-from-turning-thirty thing. Who knows?
If I examine all of the things in my life that I regret or that I am afraid of or that I usually try not to remember, the running theme seems to be that I have felt that I have been unheard. And I'm angry about it.
My solution? Hide from the world and isolate myself. Drive my husband crazy with worry with uncharacteristically impulsive decisions that are harmful and damaging. Appear unapproachable and prickly. Flake on friends and family just to lay on the couch all day and eat candy and get fat. Obviously it's not a good long term plan.
My father-in-law said something to my husband that made a lot of sense to me. He said that dealing with depression isn't as simple as we think it should be. Just taking an anti-depressant isn't the answer. That's only twenty percent of the answer. Going to therapy is maybe another twenty percent. Eating healthily and exercising often is say fifteen percent. Making time to do things you enjoy is another ten percent. Getting enough sleep - fifteen percent. Spending time with people who make you feel good about yourself is twenty percent.
I've got a lot of work to do to pull myself out of this. I guess what I'm saying is please be patient with me.
I've missed you, Heather!! Hugs from Colorado.
ReplyDeletethis is very timely for me, I've been struggling with being "down", I know it's small potatoes compared to the whole enchilada of depression, but it's been tough. I have also been hiding (somewhat), the thing is, I am still functioning and yet every single day I WANT to cop out. I want to say I can't, won't, whatever, but I keep being drawn in, keeping my feet plodding along on that never ending treadmill of life. I work out HARD every morning from 6AM till 7:30 I burn about 6-7 hundred calories per day. I eat less, I ache in every muscle of my body, but I remain the same in size and weight. This has been my mo for the past 4 months. I SHOULD get a job, but I can't find the courage/energy/desire to do it. I SHOULD write my family history but can't get the motivation. I do my VT but I feel I'm missing the mark. I'm plodding along thru my life in a half daze. Really don't know what to do about it, but I just keep trying to help others as much as I can. I know that's the answer to lose myself, but man is it a bugger to wade thru all this muck. I've missed you so much, you can't imagine how much it meant to me that you stopped in for a visit with your little cuddlebug. I love you with as much love as I'm capable of, I know you will muscle through this, you are so courageous, and intelligent, keep up your chin and fake it till you make it. I make myself laugh more, it might be helping. Love you.
ReplyDeleteOh girl!!! I love you so much. I've been praying for you and will continue to! Know that I'm your friend and am here for you for whatever!!!
ReplyDeleteHeather my heart goes out to you and you are in my thoughts and now my prayers. I love you and think that you are amazing; with an adorable little one who needs you and a great husband who it appears adores you very much! Love to you from afar!
ReplyDeleteYour absence has NOT gone unnoticed!! I thought you were out of town at first, but... Anyway, I have absolutely no stereotypes against depression- I've dealt with it and had others very close to me deal with it my whole life! What do you need?? Company? Dinners? Play dates? One-on-one talks? Tell me, and I will make sure it happens!! I'm SO glad you decided to write about what is going on- you have SO many friends who are here for you!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, can so totally relate, although, of course, we each do this our own way. Agree with all the things you said that help. I might add one more. Start a gratitude journal. Fill with photos, quotes, jokes, fortune cookie fortunes, whatever makes you laugh, grateful, or happy. I went from crying daily to every other day, to once a week within about 10 days. Not necessarily the total solution, but it surely helps. also connecting with God, even if it's only going through the motions. May the force be with you! (Renee Kerr)
